Interesting points Danial - I notice all your tools seem to be new or at least relatively new - have you considered buying vintage tools - planes in particular (I don’t think buying old chisels makes sense) - there are some wonderful Stanley planes in Ebay if you know what to look for (and ideally pre 1960). Glad that Substack recommended you as someone to read. Matthew

Thanks for the comment, Matthew. Yes, you're correct all my tools are brand new. I do have a Stanley No. 5 that belonged to my Grandfather, which I write about in an earlier post.

Cost wasn't a major consideration for me, so I could buy new without too much worry. But the main reason I went new instead of vintage is that I wanted to learn how to woodwork without learning how to restore a used tool - especially as I wouldn't have known what a well setup tool was supposed to feel like. I'm certainly more comfortable now, but even then, woodworking in a small apartment isn't conducive to flattening plane soles and removing lots of rust!

Agree, but it’s so hard to truly know yourself - what you like using, what suits your needs - until you start using the thing(s)!
